What kinds of materials do you test?

  • Pipes for drainage, water and sewer systems.
  • Concrete, asphalt, cement treated base, and soil for roads.
  • Reinforcing steel, blocks, bricks, steel cables, engineering fabrics, and many other miscellaneous materials used for buildings, bridges and sewer rehabilitation.

How do I schedule work at the Lab?

Forty-eight hours notification is required before the start of any work. Time required is especially critical when starting fill work or when soils or other sampling is required. Call (858) 627-3279 to schedule inspections. Twenty-four hours notification is required when scheduling work for the following day and calls to the Lab must be made before noon of the preceding day. Seven days notification is required for plants outside of the Southern California area to ensure scheduling. Costs for inspections outside the boundaries established in the contract shall be borne by the contractor.

What information do I need to schedule work?

  • Project Name
  • Contractor Name
  • Date of Work
  • Type of Work Requested
  • Project Location
  • Resident Engineer
  • Source of Plant Material
  • Time Requested Work Order Number
  • Thomas Brothers Coordinates
  • Estimate of Tonnage or Yardage

What if the materials are fabricated out of town?

The City has engineers and technicians available to travel and perform inspections and testing at the source of manufacture. For more information, Contact Us
